Once a frontier homestead, Riverdene has been beautifully restored and now rings with the sound of hospitality being thoroughly enjoyed, as it must once have done all those years ago. The outside is completely faithful to original settle architecture, and whilst the rooms and lounges serve the same purpose as they always have done, a modern refurbishing makes it much more like a friends’ house (finished to the highest possible standards). Riverdene is superb for families, with a kids coordinator on-site, a supervised play room and jungle gym and a shallow section of the pool for them to splash in.
Shamwari Private Game Reserve is not far off the size of the Isle of Wight, a huge area of land with the sole aim of restoring and preserving the original landscape, flora and fauna of the region. Game concentrations are excellent, and this is definitely the best place in the Eastern Cape to see the Big Five of elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard in the wild.
