The first thing to appreciate about Hawksmoor House is its location. Although only 15 minutes drive from Stellenbosch, you wouldn’t know it, as you are right in the heart of a wine farm, surrounded by vines, farmyard animals, dogs, and a real sense of Arcadian isolation. Although the setting is an escape from the 21st century, the décor is a reminder that one of the owners, Simon, is an antiques dealer with a real eye for style. Beautiful, rich, bold colours are combined with period furnishings in combinations that feel homely, yet still impress. The vines around you are not yet processed on site, but at nearby estates, and you can try the results in the newly restored wine cellar and tasting room. Hawksmoor is still relatively new on the scene, a bit of a hidden gem, but this can’t last particularly when you combine all of the above with amazing prices: it really offers perhaps the best value accommodation in the Winelands. So get there now before the crowds!
