For anyone who likes good food and wine, South Africa is a paradise. Over the last decade or so, South African cuisine has developed hugely, and restaurants like La Colombe and Test Kitchen are now considered amongst the best in the world. It’s not all about fine dining though, even a casual meal in South Africa is usually excellent: fresh, local ingredients, expertly cooked. South African wines, particularly those from smaller producers that don’t export, are superb and range from the fresh and simple, to the aged and complex. With the rand as weak as it is, the other joy is the bill. £50 a head will get you Michelin star standard food with wine, whilst a lovely lunch with a drink or two can be had for as little as £10. Although perhaps not internationally recognised yet, food and drink are an integral part of a South African holiday, and will almost certainly be a major highlight for you.
